After rereading the message a couple of times, I think what
Dan was trying to say was the specifically the 5300 and its
counterpart, the 5260, are actually Nubus based (for the
most part anyway) and should not be discussed at length on
the PCI Mac list. Since Dan runs this mail-list and related
website, I am sure he has a pretty good handle on what does
and doesn't qualify as a PCI Mac. For the most part, I
think he was trying to head-off tangent discussion -- much
like the one I am participating in now.

Back to the 5500: I have one of these wonderful machines
for my son. We are currently running 8.6 and it has been
quite stable for the most part.

The symptoms of unexplained crashes during installs may
hang on a bad cable. Using Jerry "Chaos Manner" Pournelle's
advice, this would be the first thing I would check.
Unfortunately, knowing that the cable is less than
accessible, this might not be so easy. Another thing you
may want to look at is if the connectors on the motherboard
are beginning to corrode. If they are, I am sure some
denatured alcohol can get anything off the connections.

In case you haven't done it before, the motherboard tray
slides right out of the back. There is a small metal handle
that unhooks from a plastic securing area that makes this
task very simple.

Now that I think of it, it may be that somehow the
motherboard has become loose or unseated in someway and
there is just a bad connection. Perhaps sliding the
motherboard halfway out and the reseating may solve the
problem.

I went back and looked through the archives and I couldn't
find what exact specs you are running on your 5500. Are you
upgrading to OS 8 from 7.x or just trying to reinstall? How
much RAM do you have? Any other info may help.

Hopefully you can get this sorted out somehow and soon!

Take care,

Aaron Oechsli
