It seems they already lost that battle on a local level. I see far more 
USB 2 external devices now and very few firewire devices anymore. And 
when there is a firewire device, it is very expensive compared to a 
comparable USB 2 device.  Intel probably pushed it by making it cheap. 
I don't know what Apple charges to license it out. Although, firewire 
stills reigns in the use of Video. It seems very controversial which is 
faster from what I could gather from the  internet. I know firewire has 
the potential to be even faster but has it even materialized?
