The following are responses to Tom Keller's post:

<I don't believe apple ever made any PCI Mac to support usb 2.0 since
they threw their
support behind firewire <snip>... Hey folks, we got FIREWIRE!, come get yours!>

Firewire has been out for years, so where are the Firewire keyboards,
mice, cameras or other devices?
Seems Apple only wants it for major throughput I/O for mass
storage/CD/DVD devices. They are not competing very well by allowing
only USB to satisfy that sector of the market. Wouldn't they have
licensed Firewire to 3rd parties for such devices? Why wouldn't Apple
envision a computer that only needs Firewire and not USB at all?

<I believe the intent of the original post was in order to find out what USB
card said list poster should go purchase. To this end, I went to comp usa
and bought some generic 5 port card (4 external/1 internal) for 17 $ and it
works flawless with everything I own- scanners, printers, joysticks,
mice,cameras, video cameras, etc, etc. and with OS's 9.1, 9.2.2. and 10.x.
I'm running one of these cards in a G3/DT, a 8600/G3, and a stock 6400/200,
I even used one in a 5260/100 for awhile.>

That original poster was under the impression that he might get the
added speed with USB 2.0 card. I think it has been pretty much
clarified (?) that even under OS X your are still only going to get
the USB1.1 speed.
I had a separate but related post regarding the compatibility of
machine PCI slot standards and the various PCI card standards. All
cards available now seem to be PCI 2.1 or 2.2. I bought a new USB
2.0 PCI 2.2 card that will not work in my PCI 2.0 8500 with
Powerlogix G3. So now you have inadvertently answered my query about
people with older non-native G3 machines w/ PCI 2.0 ports having
success with USB cards (assuming your card was PCI 2.1 standard). I
have yet to hear from someone that has a PCI 2.2 card working in a
PCI 2.0 slot. My cheapo generic Firewire card works fine, whatever
PCI standard it may be! Doesn't say. I have a new cheapo USB 1.1 PCI
2.1 card on the way.
