Since he can use LocalTalk for file sharing with your other machines, 
it's not a hardware problem.

Try resetting the Chooser's prefs.  Do this by holding down cmd and 
opt while opening it.

Try installing the latest LaserWriter driver (8.6.1, I think).

Updating my LaserWriter driver eliminated a lot of problems here.
