Thanks to all of the folks who attempted to help me with this problem. 
However, it was a search on the AppleCare Knowledge Base that did the
trick after all.  Here is an interesting excerpt:  

"You will likely encounter an -8940 error message when creating or when
printing to a desktop printer created with the Chooser, if the client
and printer are both on the same LocalTalk segment, and there is a
LocalTalk Bridge or possibly a hardware bridge on that segment."

That was exactly my situation and Apple's solution worked.
