I just zeroed the drive a couple days ago and fresh installed OS 9.1.
The drive tested fine with no bad blocks. At least the improved Disk
First Aid in 9.1 can fix the corruption on its own; the one that came
with 8.6 couldn't. I've been using the drive under 8.6 for almost a
month and the corruption problem never ceased.

Is there something problematic about these cards?

Though the original PRAM battery tested fine I replaced it with a fresh
one. I tried just about everything from replacing the cable to moving
the PCI cards around. I checked the drive compatibility page at
xlr8yourmac.com and noticed a couple other people had similar problems
with the same drive and card in PCI Macs. I should have checked it
before though I still would have bought the Maxtor since it was only $29
after rebate.

I guess I'll try finding a hard drive that's listed as being compatible
with the card and keep the Maxtor for when I put together a newer Mac.
