Dunno if this helps, but here's my setup:

7300/200 Connected via Ethernet port to a Belkin 4 port Router
iMac Rev. b Connected via Ethernet port to the same Router
Toshiba Notebook with PCMCIA Ethernet Card connected to same Router

Router Connected to cable modem

Cable Modem connected to cable outlet in wall.

All three computers can be online at the same time.  No need for 
switcher, or hub.  Router does it all, and I can share files over the 
network while online.  (I also have a splitter on the 7300 end going to 
my XCLAIM VR card, so I can watch TV while sharing files and surfing the 
net simultaneously!)
