You know... this is a VERY good point!  So many companies skimp / cut 
costs on their power supplies - and that makes them vulnerable to 
various spikes and surges.  Surge protectors, even the $5 power-strip 
ones, are much much much better than nothing.

If you own your cable modem (instead of renting), I would strongly 
recommend one of the surge protectors that you connect the coax 
through!
