APPLE Personal LaserWriter NT printing problems, including Printer
driver installed but not available in Chooser

--------------------

I will also forward this Email and see if anyone else has any
information on printing issues with a Power Macintosh 7100, Mac OS 8.6,
and printing with an old APPLE Personal LaserWriter NT:

--------------------

Hi,

This is what I have found so far on APPLE's site:

Mirror of Apple's old archive:

ftp://mirror.apple.com/pub/mirrors/Apple_Software_Updates/English-North_American/Macintosh/Printing/LaserWriter/

LaserWriter 8.6.1 software might possibly be one that works under Mac OS
8.6 with the APPLE Personal LaserWriter NT and the
current download link is at:

ftp://mirror.apple.com/pub/mirrors/Apple_Software_Updates/English-North_American/Macintosh/Printing/LaserWriter/LW_8.6.1.smi.bin

There is a very old article also:

LaserWriter Printers: Mac OS Print Drivers and Cable Matrix
AppleCare Document: 30154

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=30154&SaveKCWindowURL=http%3A%2F%2Fkbase.info.apple.com%2Fcgi-bin%2FWebObjects%2Fkbase.woa%2Fwa%2FSaveKCToHomePage&searchMode=Expert&kbhost=kbase.info.apple.com&showButton=false&randomValue=100&showSurvey=false&sessionID=anonymous|163775788

Some other troubleshooting items I noted online listed regarding issues
with the APPLE Personal LaserWriter NT and Mac OS 8.6, were
as follows:

1) How much RAM in installed inside the Personal LaserWriter NT itself?

2) Did you allocate more memory to Print Monitor (located in the
Extensions folder)? This can be changed by high-lighting Print Monitor
then doing a Get Info, and using the pull-down menu. The default
assigned memory is generally 160k, but it usually has problems if it
does not have at least 512k assigned.

3) Does the problem exist when printing from all applications?

4) Does the problem exist when you boot your machine with all extensions
off except the ones used for printing (and Ethernet if applicable), and
then try to print?

4) If you have both Ethernet and Serial ports running printers: Does
this unwanted behavior exist on both Ethernet and Serial (Printer Port)
connections?

5) After you have gone through this list of questions and applied their
solutions and you problem persists, you may need to add more RAM to the
printer, or buy an newer Macintosh compatible serial port (not USB port
or FireWire port) printer.
