THe MDI (or sometimes MDIX) port allows you to switch
the port from a straight-through to a crossed cable
configuration. When your trying to chain two devices
together, generally you'll need a cross cable (not a
standard ethernet cable) The MDI port lets you use a
regular cable, and the changes the way the port
handles the information to make it function as if it
is a cross cable.

Do you need to push it? Well, thats easy enough to
tell. Plug the hub into the router in the ports you
mentioned. You should get a green link light on both
devices when they are both powered on and the cables
are attached. If you don't have a green light on both
sides, press the MDI button and see if that changes,
it should. The MDI button just toggles things on and
off so you won't hurt anythign by trying it.

As for you not being able to share things.... Sounds
to me like you might have some traffic issues.. If
your network card in your main computer turned it's
link light red, that generally signifies collisions on
the line. If you are gettign a lot of collisions,
that would keep your network from functioning. If you
got the collisions when you connected the hub but it
went away when you disconnected it, I'd assume a bad
hub port causing chatter (or generating traffic) and
not use that port and try a different one...

Hope all that made sense...

Cheers,
Sionnach
