<< I just wiped 9.2.2 off my drive tonight just for the fact that it seems to have a mind of it's own. It was very unstable on my 8500/G3 >>
This is precisely one of the reasons I have multiple partions/hard drives, with various OS's on them. Each OS has whatever extensions I need that it can run. Let's me boot off different OS's to repair the main drive or check against a OS/App conflict and so on. No reinstalling and then finding and installing patches, drivers etc. At the moment, I have 8.6, 9.1, 9.2.2 and OSX.1.5, but run 9.2.2 since it seems fastest and I have no problems. 8.6 doesn't let me use my FW or USB stuff so I only use that when I wonder if a newer OS isn't playing nice with some new gadget, like my Skyline wireless card setup.
