7.6 is fine, but lacks the features of OS 8, which I like.  8.6 is a great OS 
IMHO, and that would be my recommendation based on personal taste.  OS 9.1 will 
probably run fine, depending on the age of software you are running on the 
machine.  I noticed that some of my older progs wouldn't run on 9, but ran on 7 
and 8.  I recommend playing with each one.  You can back up your drive with 7.6 
and install 8, then you'll have your old untouched 7.6 folder available to go 
back to.  Same thing for 8.6 and 9.  Play around with it, always leaving 
yourself an "undo," and pick the one you like.  There is NEVER a necessity to 
upgrade the OS as long as the current one does the things you need it to. (ie, 
run all your apps, is stable, etc.)
