Exchanging the original cpu for a faster one is a logical step up the upgrade path. You did the right thing as the 604e-180 card probably consumes less current than your 601-100. The only non-interchangeable cpu for your 7500 is the Mach5 250-300-350 mHz that came with Kansas (8600/9600) boards. Power supplies do age too with electrolytic capacitors drying up placing a tremendous strain on the system at powerup. Upgrade your power supply and enjoy your Mac.
