I made a mistake, I meant 8x8 not 8k refresh. OWC says that 8x8 is what the memory controller is designed for, and that their sticks are 8x8 and 100% compatible with G3 upgrades. I bought the problem sticks from Coast To Coast several years ago. NOW they label their 128MB sticks "Not Compatible With G3 Upgrades". Too bad I bought them so long ago. I'm looking for the receipt right now. > If you think the ram is a problem the best thing to do is test it with >Ramometer or TechToolPro - it may be just one bad stick - or it >may not be >the ram at all. If only it were that easy. I have run every utility I could find; I have spent countless hours trying to find concrete proof of a memory error. But to no avail. The machine will just hang at random intervals. I pull the upgrade card out (XLR8 MACHCarrier with OEM Apple 300MHz ZIF) and the machine works fine. I pull the sticks out and put the upgrade back in, the machine works fine. But that's the computer-hardware version of 'circumstantial evidence', I'm dying for a 'smoking gun.' If only there was a Boot-up screen like the ATI Radeon 9700, but instead of "You have forgotten to plug in the external power plug to the video card" it would be "You have purchased crappy ram. Don't expect a G3 upgrade to work with it." (Now that I think about it, they kinda *did* do that with SDRAM machines a while ago, didn't they?) Actually, what I would've like is for Apple to use a memory-controller that would work even if you used sdram in it. But I guess that is asking waaaaay too much. Why can't they just stick to being a software company? Nowadays the only hardware difference between a Mac and a PC is the processor, and if they change over to the 970, why don't they do x86 too? Sorry, that's waay OT, but after the 6400 2k debacle and this 8x8 thing I'm about to have a memory-controller meltdown. Or maybe I'll just go melt some memory-controllers. _________________________________________________________________ Protect your PC - get McAfee.com VirusScan Online http://clinic.mcafee.com/clinic/ibuy/campaign.asp?cid=3963 -- PCI-PowerMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
