After trying a number of suggestions I'm no further forward. In the last few
days I've:
Deleted the HP printer driver preferences
Deleted and re-installed the HP printer driver
   Defragmented the hard drive
   Virtual memory OFF
   Quit all unnecessary applications
   Set printing to 'foreground'
Set the resolution of the image to an easy divisor of the printer
   resolution
Made the image a TIFF file rather than PICT or JPEG
Set the Desktop Printer memory allocation to 50Mb
Set GraphicConvertor's memory allocation to 50Mb
There is 900Mb of contiguous hard drive space after defragmentation
The largest unused block of RAM is 300Mb

...and still the message "System error - Disk full (-34) occurred" after 15
minutes or so :-(

Even more interesting is the fact that if I use a 'PowerPrint' driver and
serial/parallel cable rather than USB the printer begins to respond and
begin printing after a mere 10/15 seconds! But the PowerPrint driver lacks
some of the facilities of the HP driver - previewing, colour adjustment,
saving of sets of preferences, range of paper types, etc.

Just what **** Disk is filling up, where is it and just how large does it
need to be?
