SoundApp is a good player. And, in fact, I was playing around with it when
I first noticed the problem.

It uses QuickTime to process midi files, that's why I thought the problem
might be there.

I have tried replacing the "QuickTime Musical Instruments" component
(although I think it would be unlikely for so many systems to have the same
corrupt file, but you never know). In any case, it didn't make a difference.
