 I have a simple electric current question about this ersatz workaround:

 Janet, they need to line up positive to negative (snake). Then you 
have a positive on one end, a negative on the other. Your drawing 
(bottom) is correct. It shows a series connection, which adds up the 
voltage. The other, a parallel connection, would add up the power, 
not the volts.
