Are you using a crossover cable to connect the two? If you take a regular 
ethernet cable and hook it directly to two machines it will not work. For 
this type of connection you'd need a crossover cable. (A crossover cable 
swaps the transmit pair (of wires) with the receive pair.) If you have an 
ethernet hub or switch, then you don't need a crossover cable, but you'd 
need two regular ethernet cables.

There's a website for networking Macs; I think it's www.threemacs.com . 
I'm sure someone on the list will correct me if I'm wrong. That site has 
a lot of good info on it.
