A ZIF card (Zero Insertion Force) is a card that holds the G3 or G4 ZIF processor. They are cheaper because they have no processor inserted. A ZIF card can be had used to new from $25 to $150 (approx). Then you need to decide what G3 or G4 ZIF processor you want to insert in the board. Used to new and speeds from 233MHz up from $10 up. >2. Is it really feasible to try to run OS X on such a >beast, or what is the rec. most basic machine for that >OS? That depends on how much finagling and doing work arounds that you would consider feasible. To me the answer would be no, but others think yes. IMHO, one of the OS 9's work fine. You would also need to add memory. >3. Should I hold out to find a 8600-9600 instead of >sinking $$$ into a 7500? I really don't know much >about the PCI situation. YES... IMHO, a 9600 would be best. More latitude and more upgrade options, along with being some of the easiest to work on. >4. Finally, I might have another option, a 6400 for >the same dosh. WOuld it be cheaper/simpler to install >X on one? IMHO, I would not even consider this..... All this is just the tip of the iceberg, and is also WIDE OPEN to personal interpretation, likes and dislikes, etc., etc...... The main thing is to determine what it is that you want to do with the Mac of choice as an end product. Once we know what it is that you want to do then the suggestios will come out of the woodwork... :-) -- Fred.... mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] -- PCI-PowerMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
