The power connector is used to supply 12V to the FW connectors at a higher amperage than is supported by the PCI bus. The problems you are describing make it sound like the card does not like the 7300 or something in your system setup is not correct. I've used OS 9.1, iTunes 2 and a PCI Firewire card with no problems. You have to set the iPod preferences in iTunes to have the unit mount on connect, but it should not freeze your computer. I'd check with the card's manufacturer to see if they say the card is suppose to work in the 7300, which has an older PCI bus than the B&W. An alternate check is to purchase a 2 or 3 port FW card that is marketed as working in the 7300 and see what happens.
