The Desktop Printer software built-in to OS 8.6 creates a spool file on the
startup disk. Some applications cause very large spool files to be created.
Increasing virtual memory will only make the problem worse since you are
using more disk space. The amount of RAM has no bearing on the problem.

Free up space on your startup hard drive and the problem should go away.
