It is possible.   You need to purchase a PCI-USB card that is either 
listed as Mac compatible or listed as OHCI compliant.  Stick with a 2 
port card.   Then D/L "USB Adapter Card Support" from Apple and 
install it.   I will let you know that USB and OS 8.1 were not the 
most stable combination.  With OS 8.6 and USB 1.4.1 Apple 'got it 
right' and my Mac ran and never crashed for no reason with that 
combination.   (IE was a pain along with some programs that were 
eventually fixed or replaced.)
