Or have i just >asked something really dumb? ------------- If the two computers and the printer are all you want to connect together, you can get by with a cheap hub (a 4 port hub should run around $15, tops). Just run an ethernet cable from each machine to the hub. If you want to access the internet from the two machines (cable or dsl) you would need a router, either hardware or software.
If MacTracker is correct, the 16/600 has a LocalTalk port. You should be able to use PhoneNet dongles and set up an AppleTalk network. Just string the Macs and printer together with three dongles and phone cords. You could do this for less than %5. I don't see a need for fast ethernet unless you are moving lots of large files around. You can't share the scanner like it was a drive. It is available only to the machine to which it is directly connected. Any scanned files can be shared however.
