Since the IBM DGHS 09Y 9 GB disk in my Workgroup Server 8550 generates a lot of noise, I decided to put a piece of clothes between the HD and the Mac's plastic frame. Unfortunately this does not make much difference. Most of the noise doesn't come from vibrations but from the spinning of the disk itself.
Tests (http://www.storagereview.com/articles/200111/20011109Renaissance_10.html ) show that Seagate's Barracuda IV is a good choice regarding low noise. But it's an ATA drive, not SCSI.
