Dear Caitlin:
I recenlty acquire an 8500/120, and now I'm a happy
 owner.

I was afraid about it's component's life, because a
computer 8 years old could have about 35000-40000
hours in use... reaching it's end of life.

Saddly, there are many components prone to fail...
including in first place Power supply fan, floppy disk
drive, CD rom drive and HD.(because it's moving parts
inside).

So, the first think I did was put everything apart:
Powersupply, HD, CD rom unit, mainboard, then, clean
everything.

By hand, I spinned the powersupply fan, and for my
happiness, it spinned very smooth.

Anyway, I decided to lube it, (a not-too-difficult
task), and it become smoother and ... quieter.(so, a
zero cost maintenance!).

About HD sounds... nothing to do, just to put downside
auto-adhesive rubber tape, so vibrations were damped.

About screws and plastics pieces, you can check for
misarranged pieces, but I think this kind of pieces
hardly can be the source of the some noise.

In my opinion, try to 'insulate' noise inside can
damage the CPU, the power supply or some motherboard's
chips, because any kind of isolating material keeps
warmer the computer's interior.

If you want to heard how to open the power supply (
don't worry, five minutes after shut down, you can
open and handle the power supply safely-removing power
cord first!-) write me back, so I can send to you some
pictures of the process.

                Have fun...

                Moises H.

                P.D. Sorry about my English.
