8.6 is better and not really so much trouble, no speed loss ! for my 
7300 i save a copy of the cd/dvd driver from 8.5 (in extension 
folder) because at least the swedish version has major errors in 8.6 
on 7x00 machines, it stalls and freezes and the cd, or some cds, spin 
up at a zillion nots and then  nothing happens. Save a copy of the 
extension and it runs flawless.
it depends on what you are using it for - but aswell 7.6.1 should 
work if you have very limited ram it would be faster - but it has not 
at all so many features AND if you are used to 8.5 you might feel 
deprived ? it depends on what you are using it for - cable or not etc,
