Also, (sorry for the multiple posts) the purpose behind using the bridge would be to still be capable of using Appletalk networking over the ethernet port...if he connects the printer directly to the computer, he would have to put the Appletalk connection on the port the printer is connected to, since it is a PS printer it requires Appletalk to work. This obviously (since you can only use Appletalk on 1 port in OS 9) would eliminate his ability to network with other Macs. Also, OS X doesn't support the serial port, so you HAVE to use a bridge like this if you are running x and want to use this printer...it's driver is available under the IP Printing section ONLY.
