This is exactly what should happen.  The x-over cable is a poor 
substitute for a hub.  It doesn't provide electrical grounding or the 
continuity signal that the Mac needs to be able to tell if there's 
life on that port - so it switches to the serial port.

IOW, buy a hub for your home.  They can be had for <$20.
