As crude as ftp is, it *works*.

We have a mixed set-up here, desktop and laptop Macs and PCs. MacOS
8.6, 9.1, X 10.2, Win98, and Win2k. An old PowerMac 7100/66 acts as
our router/firewall and server. It runs regular File Sharing over
AppleTalk for the Macs, and NetPresenz (ftp) for the outside world
and PCs.

You throw files onto the server from one machine and pick 'em up from
another. And since the shared folders are backed up regularly, it's
a nice place to put copies of your mailboxes and such.

Originally we thought we needed some fancy full-integrated file
serving solution. But when we really looked at what we wanted to
share... ftp was easiest and cheapest.

Backups work too... Originally we had only a CD burner on one of the
PCs. We were too cheap to buy Retrospect, so we just used StuffIt
Lite. You make a 600+ MB archive then copy it to the PC for burning.
Now I have a 2x CD burner on my desktop Mac ($20 on eBay). I just
mount the other Mac's disks over AppleTalk and burn away. (Have to
play a few games to backup the MacOS boot volume; the OS has a death
grip on some files and won't let you read 'em via file sharing.
*shrug*)
