If I don't miss my guess, you have transmission problems at the printer 
and modem ports.  Uneducated guess... anything from contacts have 
become insecure -> some chip or electronic component is failing.  Quick 
solution is replace the motherboard @15.00-$25.00 US via ebay or 
swaplist.  Removal and installation of motherboards is so basic there's 
no need to be intimidated. There are probably other work arounds for 
those with soldering and pcb experience, but if it is not software 
related (good argument against possibility) I'd suspect the ports are 
faulty.
