Well, This depends on the speed of your G3, and the speed of your 
CD-ROM, as well as the amount of available RAM. I assume, since you are 
getting the spinning beachball, that you are installing Mac OS X 10.0 
or 10.1? I have seen this process take up to 5 minutes on a really slow 
upgraded 8500. Just be patient, it takes time. As for the can;t open 
error, the screen you saw there is the Open Firmware for the computer. 
Zapping the PRAM fixes it, or you can hit Command-Option-O-F and then 
type reset_all at the promt to do the same thing. I honestly suggest 
you upgrade to 10.2, it is well worth it in terms of speed, stability, 
and features.
