I'd kill two birds with one stone and get a router with a built-in hub
or switch.

Does the HP software have a print server function? I have a Canon USB
printer connected to my 9600 (9.2.2) and use it as a print server for my
other Macs (8.6). I'm not sure if this would work between 8.6 and OS X,
however.

I don't think so, but if there is I'd like to know. Probably best just
to continue to use it on the 9600 only and transfer the images over to
the Powerbook when needed. I heard there isn't much support for SCSI
scanners in OS X.

As above I'm not sure about the print sharing but there won't be any
trouble with file sharing between the two. If you like it and don't need
to run something that requires a higher OS then stay with 8.6.
