Just to jump into the fray...
Drives are designated as FH, HH, or LP. That's "full height", "half
height", and "low profile". They're also designated by diameter of
the platters within, typically 5.25", 3.5", 1", and 0.5".
Full height drives are usually 5.25" platters, and are something the
average consumer probably won't see, unless they buy the wrong thing
on eBay. :) They're big and slow. We call 'em boat anchors.
The drives you see mounted in the upper bay of the PowerMac 7xxx, for
example, are 3.5" LP. A HH drive won't fit there... but it will fit
in the *lower* bay.
As an additional confusion, there's spindle speed - 3200, 5400, 7200,
and 10,000 rpm (revolutions per minute). I've had customers pshaw
5400rpm 1" drives. But the fact that its only 1" diameter means that
the access rate will be on par with a 7200rpm 3.5" diameter drive!
FWIW,

(whoze planning to mount PDAs with 20,000 rpm drives on his bicycle,
to act as gyroscopes! :)
