Speaking of which..............the original small hard drive that came in my 6500
started to make wierd sounds, and the fan got noisy as well.

Before it croaked I managed to move the files off it to an external SCSI drive and
I replaced the small IDE drive with a 40-gig brand new ATA drive. 5,400 RPM
Maxtor, I think.

WELL !!!!

Nothing I did to that computer improved performance as much as tossing the 1997
hard drive out and putting in a 2002 hard drive. Along with everything else the
hard drive technology has improved radically since 1997 and this new drive is
cooler, faster, quieter and uses less power than the old drive. Data retrieval is
MUCH faster and since less power is being required of the power supply the fan
does not increase in pitch like it used to do.

Sonnet-powered G3 6500/400 running OS 8.6 and 9.1 with 128 Megs of EDO RAM.

8.6 feels faster.
