Clock problem

If I disconnect the 9600/200 (G3 upgrade, OS 9.1) the clock reverts 
to 1957 and the time is lost. I thought the problem was the PRAM 
battery, but fitting a new one (it's fresh too, not NOS) hasn't made 
any difference. This is the 9600 with odd problems...

Ideas?
