I use a free utility, Disk Wizard for my removables on 9.1.
http://pauillac.inria.fr/~fpottier/wizard.html.en

It does create an index, but it's much faster than Sherlock. Only limitation
is that it cannot index a hard drive larger than (I think) 3 gigs.
