As long as both CD drives are Apple, additional hard drives shouldn't cause a
problem. If you want to start from the new hard drive, leave the CD drives empty
and use the cmd-opt-shift-delete sequence to start from the new drive. To start
from an non Apple CD drive, you might need to disconnect the new hard drive so
that the cmd-opt-shift-delete sequence grabs the correct drive.

I can relate to your problem. I have some software that uses 8.1/8.6, so I have
8.1 on one of my other drives. (I find 8.1 to be more stable than 8.6 for my
needs.) I use 9.1 on my primary startup drive.

BTW: If you need to use 8.1 for any programs, you can move the carbonlib
extension into the 8.1 extensions folder and it will allow many newer programs
requiring that extension to work under 8.1.

Another note: There is an extension called "911", available for free download at
download.com among other places, that allows some older programs to run under
9.1. It doesn't work for all old programs, (thus my continued use of 8.1) but you
might try it and see if at least some of your older programs will work with 9.1.
(It might save some expensive upgrades.)
