PUBLIC NOTICE WARNING ABOUT XANTREX INVERTER If you use power in your camper or car as I do to power my Mac and wireless internet then read on:
List members take note: We all read recent posts about the $ 69.95 1kW Xantrex inverter at Costco and elsewhere, BUT BEWARE!! I have purchased one based upon this tip that was well intentioned, but the unit is not well. For example, it will not start even a 35 Watt TV. It kicks off. The only way to get it to run the TV is to turn the TV on, then turn the inverter on. Under this condition the inverter will work. So there is no way it will work with a refer as a load. I have experimented with several loads and found none that would work as expected without the fault indicator illuminating and the inverter shutting down. This is I suspect the fault of the control circuitry within the unit being set wrongly to monitor the terminal voltages instantly during any start up, when instead, such monitoring should be excluding the first 5 seconds, then and only then, should it shut down the inverter for low voltage input, if it is found to be low at the end of the 5 second start up ignore period. I called Xantrex customer service and found that several units have escaped China quality control and were shipped and you can buy one that is in fact defective. These made in China inverters are going to have a high rate of failure, based upon my experience with China electronics products. This is exactly what was happening in the 1950s with Japan products, they mostly did not work then and parts were a joke to get!!! So, you do NOT GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR only what you are willing to settle for, and I have returned my purchase for repair!! Each purchaser will want to extensively test their units for these badly designed control systems, before the warranty expires and Xantrex tells you it will cost x dollars for them to fix, what was in fact broken in the first place. FYI: My POWERSTAR inverter functions just fine under exactly these same tests - as well it should!!!
