Ok, now that I've got the listnanny's attention (as well as any self appointed LN's) :) :
I recently bought a lot of 4 modems from a gentleman selling via eBay. I've got two problems with what I've purchased. (The lot didn't have any pictures, and only a 2 or 3 line description, but the total only came to $12 including shipping, so why not?) The first is the gem in the lot, a BestData 56K modem. Unfortunately, the modem didn't have the proper AC adapter.The model is a Smart One 56, and has model numbers as follows: 56spx,56x,56spmac,56ma. I assume the case is the same with these models, as are probably the internal components, but the software and cables are likely different from model to model. Anyone have one of these that can let me know what the proper voltage (volts and AC or DC)and amperage (or wattage) rating is for this unit? If you have a spec sheet, what is the size of the barrel connector going into the unit. (I assume I'm going to have to hunt down the proper sized transformer, and solder on the appropriate end? The second is probably the least attractive in the lot, or at least for me, because I don't knowingly have a computer that can use it. This modem has no power supply for it, nor is there a socket for it. I think they call this a Geo modem? It has an extra pin just off center on the plug. It's a Global Village and it's model number is PL510P. Anyone have any info on this device? Such as is it OT to discuss it here? If it is, please email me off list, so as to not clutter the list with these ramblings. If there's a FAQ on this somewhere, can you tell me where it is? The other two are also Global Village; one is a 28.8 Platinum, and the final one is something I've never seen before. It's a GV 33.6 Speakerphone modem. What a neat toy for a geek like me. I can have my computer take my calls for me, dial the phone for me (and I'll talk through the modem), and it's a modem, so I can get on the 'net with it. As you can tell, I'm amused easily. The case is what I like the most I think. It stands vertically instead of laying flat on the desk (narrower footprint, but not by much) and has a Star Wars or Star Trak scifi look to it. This was an unexpected surprise when I opened the package. Anyhow, my plan is to use a few of these modems with a few Macs I don't need any longer, and donate them to people who can use them, probably via my church. (the church is St. Mark's in Gary, IN, perhaps you've heard of the church or the city) If I can pull this off, I can buy an old Mac, play with it for a few months, dump some money in it and see just what it can do, and then when I'm bored with it, donate it to a family that wouldn't have a computer in the house otherwise, and not have to store it or throw it out. It sounds like everyone wins, as I can tinker as much as I can afford, and not have a basement full of Macs rotting away, a needy family can get a computer in their house (albeit an old one), the church can get some publicity, and possibly an ISP can get a new customer. Best of all, it would be perpetual, as I don't see myself stopping buying low end Macs anytime soon (it's a fun hobby in the unlikely event you don't already know. Anyone can go out and buy a brand new, state of the art computer and type a paper, balance a budget or surf the web; it's challenging to see how old of a machine you can use to do the same things) FWIW, most of these machines would be off topic for this list, though some could fly on the once-removed clause, so please don't ask what I'd like to sell instead of donate.
