Most of the PPC Performa machines came with a bunch of applications
pre-installed. One of them was MegaPhone, which used a modem (seems most
were Global Village, though some were Apple branded, I believe) in the
communications slot as a phone answering machine. I have a 5200 sitting
here on the corner of the desk, the sole function of which is to be an
answering machine/fax machine.

If your modem supports voice, then you need to hunt down the software to
use it as an answering machine. I have seen several versions, mostly
shareware, that will do this for you on voice capable modems.
