I recall reading that (at least some) of the Smart & Friendly units have a
Yamaha mechanism.

I'm using a Yamaha 4416S with an 8600. After sorting out some extension
conflicts with Toast and iTunes, it is now working well.

I can read/write with it. I have not tried booting from it.
