Just a quick post, must head back out to my garden.

Sounds like a PRAM issue. Do the zap-PRAM at startup, let it chime 5-10
times to really get it zapped. I had that problem w/ my 8500 a while
back, just printing, but the port issue cleared up when the PRAM was
refreshed. Seems like your midi is OK.
