After some very useful advice from people on this list, I got my 7200 to work with the compaq SCSI drive. Turned out that a combination of termination and spin-up jumper issues were preventing it from working.
So I now have a 7200 as an MP3 server and CD burner. Spec: 7200/90, 40MB RAM, Voodoo5 graphics card, SCSI 4.3MB 7200rpm drive, internal HP writer (invisible to OS but Toast sees it), running 9.2.2, which is surprisingly snappy when virtual memory isn't being accessed.
