I recently started getting error messages of "too many files open". I could not open Appleworks 6 the other day and today I couldn't open Eudora.

Every process that runs in the background is an open file. if your system has a lot of fonts then each one is an open file. Mac OS 8.6 had a rather low number limiting the number of open files, which was increased in later OS,s. Alsoft had a free utility, named (list open files) on its -ASK AL- web site. There is also one called - Process Viewer- IIRC and others that will show all open files.

I didn't realize that about the fonts, and yes, I do have a lot. However, that hasn't changed. I haven't added any fonts or other utilities in a long time that would run in the background or load on start-up. In fact, the only thing I have added, which is the program that gets the -42 error message and which is when all my troubles began, is Acrobat 5 (full standard version).

Also, I have had no problems opening something like Quark, even if I have multiple images open in Photoshop, and maybe Explorer running too. I'll try that utility, but I really don't think the problem is open files. Even if Acrobat loaded any additional fonts when I installed it, it still couldn't compare to the number of images I open in Photoshop after using my camera.
