If you are using Virtual Memory and don't need it turn it off.

Turning off Virtual Memory greatly reduces the open files count; at least
according to Alsoft's Open File count 2.0 Control Strip Module; available free
from the Alsoft's web site as mention in an earlier post.

Earlier today at work with VM off, my 7300/200 OS 8.6 had 249 files open with
only three or four programs running. The max for OS 8.6 is 348, OS 9 permits
8,169 files to be open. --glen

Acrobat or Explorer were open). I am also getting -42 error messages when Acrobat
opens and my Mac error utilities (I have two) indicate that this also means
there are too many files open. But I get this message with Acrobat even when
nothing else is open (except Spell Tools which opens on start-up).

I have 384MB of RAM. This is a 9600/233 running OS 8.6. I know that

the OS is part of my other problems with Acrobat 5. But don't

understand the "too many files" problem.

Any thoughts? Thanks.
