It was my understanding that stuffit 7 was more of an OS X app.
It never really got along with the other kids in 9.1 or 9.2.2 for me either.
I stuck with 6.5 for 9.2.2 and below, and 7 for X.


The item that makes that little icon appear in the menu bar is "magic menu" and it's located in your contextual menu items folder, although I think there may also be a separate extension for it. Remove it from the contextual items folder and the icon disappears. Personally I prefer the little magic menu over having stuffit open more windows on the desktop, and it auto quits the app as soon as it's done unstuffing.
