That will work. I do it all the time.

The SCSI main hard drive in my 7600>G3 (running OS 8.6) is getting crowded, and I would like to replace it with a larger one. I'd like to do the upgrade as simply as possible.

It occurs to me that I might be able to do the following:
A. Install the new drive temporarily in a stand-alone enclosure and plug it in as an external drive. Set the ID to an unused one.
B. Start up the computer from a bootable CD, name the new drive with a temporary name, format it, run Disk Doctor on it, and wipe it.
C. Copy the entire contents of the old drive on to the new drive by dragging the old drive onto the new one on the desktop. (I think this should work, and it should copy the invisible files, too.)
D. Re-name the new drive to have the same name as the old one. (If necessary, rename the old drive by putting an extra character into its name.) Without doing anything else, shut down.
E. Take the old hard drive out of the computer. Remove the new drive from its enclosure. Set the ID to be the same as that of the old drive. Install the new drive where the old one was.
F. That's all, folks.

Can anyone who knows more about these things than I do venture an opinion about whether this procedure will work, and/or suggest changes which will make it work?
