For the better part of three days, I've been trying to get this Sony USB 2 External CD-R/RW CRX220E1 to show up on my desktop so I can use it on my 7300/G3/400 with (now) OS 9.1.

I've upgraded to OS 9.1. I've turned on and off so many extensions that my Extension Manager calls me by my first name (preceded with "You again?"). I've gone to the Sony support site and sent in the problem (automated response so far). I even joined an online Sony CRX2xx forum. I downloaded Disk Burner 1.0.1 (upgrade from the v.1.0 which came with OS 9.1) only to have it state, "Won't work on this computer"; apparently it only works with built-in CD-RWs. I turned off all USB extensions except Toast Lite, then turned that off and turned on Disk Burner and Authoring Support. I turned off the other USB devices' extensions (Kodak digital camera and HP printer) and unplugged them. Nothing works. I even forgotten what all I've done.

What I have now is a very expensive external CD-ROM. Looks pretty. Has nice lights in front. Shines in the dark. Shines in the light. Doesn't R/RW.

I really, really need a CD-RW to download, copy, and transfer digital communications programs to (blecchh) a Windoze laptop for ham radio purposes. Soooooooo......

......I'm adopting a new mindset that will enable me to bite the financial bullet and upgrade to a new/newer Mac with all the stuff I need built in, e.g. USB ports, ethernet slot, lotsa space on the HD, lotsa RAM (I just ordered 256 more for this 7300; I think I started out with 16)), a larger screen (17" on the G4; I'm still on my original 12") and, of course, a built-in CD-RW. There's a number of Powerbooks on eBay with one listed at $1000 NEW for a G4 with everything on it except a flush toilet. Maybe it's time I move on anyway: I'm gonna hit the road as a nomad at the end of this year and a desktop is a little too large for my camper trailer although my original plan was to build a shelf for it. I'm gonna miss this list and everyone on it; it's been my MacCrutch for more than three years now, preceded by several years on Vintage Macs (IIvx) with some of the same people.

So, how do I network a G4 Powerbook to a 7300 to transfer all the stuff that's on this machine?
