Forget ebay and the PB's, Fred wants to burn, not get burned :-)For the better part of three days, I've been trying to get this Sony USB 2 External CD-R/RW CRX220E1 to show up on my desktop so I can use it on my 7300/G3/400 with (now) OS 9.1.
I'm still waiting for the Imac I bought on ebay almost 3 yrs ago, and I've stopped leaving the porch light on :-)
Fred, does that USB 2 device say that it's backwards compatible with USB 1.1 anywhere in the documentation that came with it? If I'm not mistaken, the only USB available under 9.1(or any mac?) is USB 1.1. Suffice to say that a USB 1.1 device will work with a USB 2.0 interface, But a USB 2.0 device does not work with a USB 1.1 interface unless it states that it's backwards compatible. This may have been your entire problem to begin with? I'm reaching a bit here, so maybe some of the other list members could give you more clarification on this issue. How about it guys?
Alas, the easier, softer, solution:
Take that thing back where you got it, PRONTO, get an internal CDRW, pull the stock CD rom, and replace it with your new CDRW. Burn a few disk, heck, make a few coasters :-) If you want a recommendation for a an internal CDRW, check the CDRW compatibility board postings on www.xlr8yourmac.com. - good info - look for one fully supported by the OS without any special hacks, etc. (much less grief). Or maybe a few list members could relate what they're using? or even suggest where to get a low cost alternative to Fred's external USB cdrw?
Hope this helps in someway, T.
