For the better part of three days, I've been trying to get this Sony
USB 2 External CD-R/RW CRX220E1 to show up on my desktop so I can use
it on my 7300/G3/400 with (now) OS 9.1.

Fred, does that USB 2 device say that it's backwards compatible with USB 1.1 anywhere in the documentation that came with it?

Yes. Supposedly, it will work at any range between USB 1 and USB 2. I could have lived with the slower speed.

If I'm not mistaken, the only USB available under 9.1(or any mac?)
is USB 1.1.
Suffice to say that a USB 1.1 device will work with a USB 2.0
interface, But a USB 2.0 device does not work with a USB 1.1
interface unless it states that it's backwards compatible. This may
have been your entire problem to begin with? I'm reaching a bit
here, so maybe some of the other list members could give you more
clarification on this issue.

According to several sites, the USB 1 software SHOULD have worked with the USB 2 device. I THINK the problem was that the software was not written for add-on PCI USB cards. I downloaded Disk Burner 1.0.4, an upgrade of the DB 1.0 which came with OS 9.1; it wouldn't install and stated that it would not work on my computer. More searching came up with the reason that I needed built-in USB ports. Extrapolating from there, I think Toast Lite is the same way WITH THIS PARTICULAR USB 2 DEVICE.

How about it guys?

Alas, the easier, softer, solution:

Take that thing back where you got it, PRONTO, get an internal CDRW,
pull the stock CD rom, and replace it with your new CDRW.

When I first ordered it from the vendor, I intended to replace my CD-ROM with it. When it arrived and I tried to install it, the SCSI cable plug of my machine was too small for the device (or maybe the other way around), I decided to go external via USB and ordered the case and support CDs.

Burn a few disk, heck, make a few coasters :-) If you want a
recommendation for a an internal CDRW, check the CDRW compatibility
board postings on www.xlr8yourmac.com.

Did that after the fact. My Sony CD-R/RW is too new to make it into the database.

- good info - look for one fully supported by the OS without any
special hacks, etc. (much less grief). Or maybe a few list members
could relate what they're using? or even suggest where to get a low
cost alternative to Fred's external USB cdrw?

Hindsight being 20-20, I should have gone retro and bought an older CD-RW. I figured I was upgrading, but didn't realize I was upgrading too far. There's also a final lesson here for me: every time I've upgraded my 7300 in some manner, it became more complicated than originally planned. I had to buy either additional hardware or upgraded software beyond whatever my original purchase or intent might have been. Example: when I upgraded to an HP-940C printer a couple years ago, I had to buy a 2-port PCI USB card, then go track down the software to support the card. Then, more RAM. I'm getting to old to play this "one more thing you'll need..." game. At least it's not a PeeCee; those machines drive people to suicide.

I now have a perfect solution: upgrade my computer from my 7300 to a
NEW iBook G3/800 or 900 already installed with a CD-RW. I'm heading
to the Apple Store at Crossgate Mall in Albany, NY on Wednesday.
After a long evening last night and most of the day today cruising
eBay, I realize that I'm not going to get what I want off eBay and
still have some accountability on the part of the seller, at least
for a Mac; there were very few higher-speed PowerBook or iBook G3s
and G4s offered by individuals that had what I wanted (CD-RW, USB
ports, Ethernet, willingness to install more RAM, at least 800MHZ),
not to mention my need for a laptop instead of a desktop). Most that
had what I wanted were offered by dealers who were only slightly less
(say $50) than an Apple Store. And I needed the Buy It Now feature; I
can't wait for an auction to end next week without any guarantee that
I'd win.

Gonna miss this old 7300, but my needs have grown beyond what it can offer.
